Homemade Spicy Meatballs and Spaghetti

It’s the “Mamma Mia” deliciously seasoned meatballs. Boldly flavored with just the right amount of spicy sauce, toss it in spaghetti too!

Meatballs have a great story of origin which started with Italian immigrants coming to America in the late 1800s where they discovered that they had more money to spend on meat than when they were in Italy and this made meat a staple. Families were putting meatballs more frequently on the table. Ironically you won’t find this dish so easily in Italy as they have a slightly different version there.

Ingredients:
  • For The Meatballs
  • 1 lb. Ground Beef
  • 1 tsp. Crushed Chili
  • 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 sprigs of Parsley, minced
  • Diced Half Onion
  • 2 tbsp. White Wine
  • 2 tbsp. Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 0.25 cup Bread Crumbs
  • 2 Large Egg
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 0.5 tsp. Black Pepper
  • 0.25 tsp. Cinnamon Powder
  • ㅤFor The Spaghetti
  • 7 oz. Spaghetti
  • 0.25 tsp. Salt
  • For The Spaghetti Sauce
  • 1 tbsp. Olive Oil
  • 2 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp. Onion, finely diced
  • 3 Bay Leaves
  • 0.25 tsp. Oregano
  • 1 cup Arrabbiata Sauce
  • 2 tbsp. Water
  • 0.5 tsp. Salt
  • 0.25 tsp. Black Pepper
  • 3 Basil
  • 0.25 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 2 sprigs of Parsley, minced
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese

Preheat the oven 180°C / 350°F

Make the meatballs by gently incorporating all the Ingredients in one bowl with your hands, until everything is combined. Do not overwork the meatball mix as this can make them dry and tough.

This is a good time to test your meatball mix for seasoning, sear one in a pan and try it out as now is the best time to add more seasoning to your mix.

Roll the raw mixture into even bite-sized balls.

Lay them out on a baking tray and bake for approx 20 mins in a hot oven until you see a nice brown caramelised crust.

Cook Spaghetti with salt.

In a medium hot pan fry the onions, garlic and add the oregano bay leaves and tomato sauce, simmer for a few minutes.

Toss the cooked spaghetti and meatballs together with the sauce.

Finish with a lavish shaving of your best Parmesan and freshly chopped basil.
