Baklava

Known as one of the middle easts grandest sweets. This easy recipe will show you it doesn’t have to be a tedious process at all. The fragrant syrup and spicy nuts captured between the micro-layers of golden pastry will enhance your senses. A traditional never old special occasion sweet, A family pleaser.

Ingredients:
  • For Nuts
  • 2 cup Hazelnuts
  • 2 cup Almonds
  • 1/2 cup Muscavado sugar
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 whole Freshly ground nutmeg
  • For Bake
  • 1 pack Filo dough
  • 1/2 cup Melted butter
  • Syrup
  • 1 cup Honey
  • 2 cup Sugar
  • 1 ea. Cinnamon stick
  • 3 ea. Green cardamom
  • 1 ea. Orange peel and juice

Preheat the oven at 300°F/150°C.

In a blender or machine to chop nuts, blend the almonds and hazlenuts with the muscovado sugar and whole nutmeg grated with a zester and ground cinnamon to a chuncky consistency.

In a baking dish, brush butter on the dish before layering the first sheet of filo dough.

Layer three sheets of filo with butter brushed in between.

Evenly spread a layer of chopped nuts to the to of the three layers of filo.

Repeat process making 4 layers of nuts then layer three more filo sheets with butter brushed in between.

Brush extra butter on top of the last layer and sprinckle a little water to hold filo down (no more than 1tsp).

Cut into small pieces.

Bake for 45 minutes. Then turn the oven up to 350°F/177°C and cook for another 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Heat in a small pot adds all ingredients of 【Syrup】and swirling the pan occasionally until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Strain the syrup and pour over the baklava and enjoy when cooled.
